Sue Mann
Sue makes contemporary abstract drawings in response to architecture to explore how interior spaces make us feel. Recent works are inspired by architectural light and comprise layers of charcoal drawings activated by light in the space. The translucent layers of drawings interact with each other in response to rhythms of natural light, gradually altering the character of the work and revealing different aspects over time.

Charcoal Drawings
Diptych 32cm x 25 cm each
This body of work is inspired by the impact of exterior light on interior spaces and the blurring of boundaries between our exterior and interior lives. The series title comes from Bachelard’s text on the value of home to fortify and nurture.
The process begins with gestural marks made in response to patterns of light. These inform the abstract structure of the drawing, as charcoal is worked into translucent paper in layers.
Presenting the work in rhythms of light prompts further conversations between the two double sided drawings. Aspects are revealed while others recede, becoming obscured.
